While David Jones went in an elegant direction for Spring/Summer SS11/12 (the shredded, studded cool of Ksubi aside), Myer has taken a different track, instead opting for something that's a little more fun, flashy and unabashedly trendy. Basically, exactly the kind of style that has made their new crown jewel sass & bide such a success. Put together by Michelle Jank, the presentation was extremely fashion forward, showing off the stylist's signature talent for working with accessories. Lots and lots of accessories.
The palette was eyewateringly bright, with oranges and fuchsias packing particular punch, although there was plenty shown in more neutral hues too. As one would expect of a large department store whose goal is always to reach far and wide, the offering was ultimately eclectic. While there was certainly a running theme of bright, vivacious glamour, some labels, like Simona (who showed androgynous suiting that was particularly fetching in teddy-boy style on Ruby Jean Wilson) broke from the mood.
Picking Jank to style the show was a very clever move on Myer's part - particularly given the tough retail climate - because in order to emulate the looks she created, one would need to buy a lot of things. Not just a dress, jacket, underskirt and shoes (as shown on Jen Hawkins in her opening sass&bide outfit), but also belts, bracelets, necklaces, and perhaps, if you're feeling particularly fancy, a fascinator.
